Wexford Wetlands

Picture of a duck walking on wetlands, surrounded by duck footprints

Healthy wetlands are vital for the biological well being of the planet. We are fortunate to have three Ramsar sites in Wexford, The Raven, Bannow Bay and Wexford Wildfowl Reserve.Along with these three sites there are many other wetlands that are not designated/protected. The protection of wetlands and waterways are an important part of climate action, as wetlands have a vital role in mitigating against climate change and its effects including:

  • water retention and regulating flow in extreme weather events,
  • acting as very effective carbon sinks,
  • contributing to the purification and filtration of water & wastewater,
  • replenishing groundwater,
  • and acting as a buffer for coastlines protecting them from extreme events and erosion.

There are may actions we can take to support our valuable and unique wetlands:

  • educate yourself and others about how wetlands and human wellbeing are interconnected,
  • make choices that minimize the loss and degradation of wetlands,
  • support wetland restoration – locally, regionally or nationally,
  • make water-friendly and ecosystem-conscious decisions,
  • use water sparingly,
  • avoid using toxic products that could flow into wetlands,
  • don’t dump waste or rubbish in wetlands,
  • become a wetland champion who advocates for protecting local wetlands and for restoring degraded ones.

What to do with WEEE?

Image of a large amount of electronic waste

WEEE refers to Waste Electrical and Electronical Equipment, which includes a wide range of things we all use, all the time. It includes batteries, lightbulbs, laptops, washing machines, kettles, computer mouse, lamp, chargers, drills, table saws, and so on. All this material is free to recycle in Ireland and there are many different places where you can drop off this waste so it can go on to have a new life and most importantly not end up in landfill.

WEEE Ireland has a handy map and list of recycling centres, electrical retailers, collection days and lighting drop offs to help you access the relevant services. You can access it here

They also have interesting information on things like their schools battery recycling competition, how to recycle electronics at work, and their important partnership with Laura Lynn, Irelands only children’s hospice.

The Council provides household recycling centres across the county that will take your electronic waste along with all your other recyclables and other waste. There is no charge for bringing purely electronic/electrical waste to one of these centres but there may be charges for other materials. Click on the link to find out more about the facility closest to you:

Enniscorthy Household Recycling Centre

Wexford Household Recycling Centre – Holmestown

New Ross Household Recycling Centre

There is money to be saved in taking advantage of your household recycling centre. When buying new electrical equipment/electronics make sure you know what the obligations of electronic retailers are and what your obligations and your rights are when disposing of them.

CLIMATE ACTION INSPIRATION

2,500 Native Trees Planted in Enniscorthy

Enniscorthy is designated as the Decarbonisation Zone for County Wexford in the County's forthcoming Climate Action Plan. Two of the climate action team were delighted to get to attend the planting of 2,500 native trees at Enniscorthy Technology Park.

The trees were planted as part of the 100 Million Trees Project. Which is a community driven initiative developed by Richard and John Mulcahy. The goal of the project is to plant 100 million native Irish trees in locations across the country, using the Miyawaki method. 2,000-2,500 trees are provided free to people who make between 0.2-0.25 acres available for planting, and will commit to it remaining forest well into the future.

If you, your business or your community organisation might want to get on board with this project and help County Wexford meet climate targets take a look here.
