August 2026 Newsletter

Hi Everyone!

The theme running through many of the events featured in this month's edition is that of  biodiversity.

"Biodiversity" means biological or species diversity. It is the total variety of all life on earth and people are an integral part of it. We depend on biodiversity for quality of life. Healthy ecosystems provide us with clean water and air, food security, medicines etc.

Our boglands provide vital carbon sinks whilst also playing host to numerous species of flora and fauna. Our hedgerows provide much-needed corridors for wildlife at a time when our hedgehog and farmland bird population is in decline.

Biodiversity is also deeply intertwined with our folklore, as highlighted in many of the stories recorded by Ireland's schoolchildren in the late 1930s Schools' Collection (Dúchas) - National Folklore Collection.

As the famous German-American entomologist & ecologist, Thomas Eisner, once said: "Biodiversity is the greatest treasure we have. Its diminishment is to be prevented at all cost".

  • New Ross Swift Survey Talk - Join Tara Adcock of Birdwatch Ireland for a talk on survey work they are currently carrying out for Wexford County Council in New Ross Town.

Sunday, 30th August, 2026

Taking place on Sunday, 30 August, 'Inside the Gate' gives visitors a unique opportunity to explore a working farm, meet the farmers and experience first-hand how food can be produced while supporting wildlife, healthy soils, clean water and biodiversity. With guided walks, demonstrations and the chance to learn about a variety of farming systems, each participating farm offers its own unique insight into the practical ways farmers are working with nature while producing nutritious food.

The Wexford farmers taking part in this year's event include; mixed stock farmer Nicholas Redmond of Gerry Farm (Ballygarrett) and dairy farmers Cheryl and Alan Poole of Rose Bridge Farm (Gorey). Nicholas Redmond will host a morning event catering for up to 30 people, while the Pooles will host an afternoon event catering for the same number. Each farm will offer a different experience and perspective, and the farmers are excited to welcome the public to their farms to share their stories, experiences and insights first-hand with attendees.

Adult tickets cost just €5, children go free and places are limited for each event, so early booking is recommended. Please read about the different events on offer to get an understanding of what you can expect on the day, as well as timings, ticket booking options and FAQs.
All info is available here: www.farmingfornature.ie/inside-the-gate <http://www.farmingfornature.ie/inside-the-gate> .

'Inside the Gate' is a family-friendly event and welcomes visitors of all ages, whether you're interested in farming, food, wildlife or simply looking for a memorable day out. Launch of new All-Ireland Pollinator Plan
2026-2030

On July 9th, the new All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2026-2030 was launched at the National Botanic Gardens, Dublin, by Ireland’s Minister for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, and Andrew Muir, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Northern Ireland.

The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is a voluntary framework coordinated by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and supported by a wide network of partner organisations across both jurisdictions.

The vision of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2026–2030 is simple but ambitious: to create a landscape that provides food and shelter every 200 metres. This mission reflects the fact that our important solitary bees can only travel these short distances from their nest sites to find food. Achieving this vision will require coordinated action across all land types, supported by strong partnerships and public engagement.
